Jack Kopnisky serves as Executive Chairman of Webster Financial Corporation and its principal banking subsidiary, Webster Bank. He brings to the bank over four decades of experience in the banking and financial services industries.
Mr. Kopnisky has a successful history of growing organizations and achieving results. As CEO and President of the previous Sterling Bancorp, his vision of growing Sterling Bancorp into a regional bank by becoming a leader in delivering superior service to owner-led businesses and families has yielded strong operating results. The company has grown from $3.2 billion in assets in 2011 to $32 billion in assets in 2020. In April of 2021, Jack announced a merger of equals with Webster Financial Corporation, taking the assets of the combined entity to $70 billion, and creating the 25th largest US based bank. In 10 years, through strong organic growth, and acquisitions of 5 banks and 10 commercial finance companies, he has created one of the highest-performing banks in the country.
Prior to his appointment, Mr. Kopnisky served as Chief Executive Officer of SJB Escrow Corporation, a $1.1 billion investment pool since 2009, that provided the initial capital for the first bank investment. The funds were raised in a SPAC-like structure.
From 2005-2008, he was President and Chief Executive Officer of First Marblehead Corporation (FMD), a provider of outsourcing services for private education lending. As CEO of First Marblehead, Mr. Kopnisky significantly restructured and repositioned the company, doubling revenues and earnings from 2005 – 2008.
Before joining First Marblehead, Mr. Kopnisky held several top executive positions at KeyCorp. He was President of the Consumer Banking Group, and CEO and President of KeyBank USA. Mr. Kopnisky held full P&I responsibilities for a $65 billion business portfolio and helped KeyCorp build one of the largest branch networks in the United States. Mr. Kopnisky started his career with Pittsburgh National Bank (now PNC) with increasing management responsibilities in commercial and retail banking.
Mr. Kopnisky has served on the Board of Directors of Webster Financial Corp (WBS) and Sterling Bancorp (STL), and preceding organizations since 2011. He served as a member of the Board of Directors of FMD (public) from 2005 – 2008. He currently serves on several non-profit boards including the Board of Trustees of St. Thomas Aquinas College, Summer Search of NYC, Children’s Museum of Manhattan, and the Westchester County Association. He previously chaired the development committee and was on the Board of Trustees for Grove City College. He has chaired and served on many non-profit boards throughout his career focused on inner-city development and youth services. Mr. Kopnisky is currently a member of The Economic Club of New York and the Princeton Club of NYC, and the New York City Partnership.
Mr. Kopnisky received his undergraduate degree from Grove City College. He graduated from the Case Western Reserve Executive Program at the Weatherhead School of Business and the University of Delaware’s Stonier Banking School. He was awarded an honorary doctoral degree from St. Thomas Aquinas College in 2017.
Jack has been married to his wife Kathy for 43 years, and they have 3 grown married children and 6 terrific grandchildren. Jack is an avid sports fan, especially focused on his hometown Pittsburgh Steelers. He is active in road-cycling, tennis, golf, and travel.
